Hello and welcome to my guide to surviving the Minecraft Survival Mode, if you are brand new to the game and have never played before then you will find this guide to be most helpful in starting your first home, finding food and crafting the tools needed to get by.
Chapter 1: Surviving the First Day
Welcome to your new world, keep in mind your world may not look exactly like this as they are created randomly. Now to get by the first day you will need to gather a few basic things before sundown, its important to get started right away because you won't have much time before night when the mobs show up.
First thing, and most important thing you will need is wood, found from trees as seen above. Seeing as you will have no tools at first, punch by holding down the left mouse button until you break down a piece of the tree then pick up the block [which will happen automatically] try and pick up at least 20 - 30 pieces. These pieces will be used for planks and sticks later on but for now, don't worry about them.
Baaah~ |
The next thing you need may be harder to find depending on where you first spawned. That being wool, which you get from these rather...special looking sheep here. You will need at least 3 pieces of wool to make a bed. For now just remember where you found them and come back later when you have a sword if there is enough time. If you have the iron needed to make shears, you would get more wool without killing the sheep. This will come in handy later on if you plan to make more beds.
Now while there is still daylight, best to find a place to hunker down for the night. Best way to do this is to find a small hill about 3 blocks high, dig a little cave into the hill.
Kinda like this. |
Keep some wood for the stove. |
Place your Crafting Table down in an empty spot by right clicking then right click again. Now you need sticks, to make them set Wooden Planks as seen below.
Now to mine some of the stone blocks nearby, in order to get cobblestone from the stone blocks, you need a pick, you can make a wooden pick from Wooden Planks and Sticks as seen in below image.
Its nothing special, but it'll do. |
Mine around your soon to be new home, for one to open it up a bit and two, gather cobblestone until you have 8 blocks. Once you have the 8 needed Cobblestone blocks, place them in the order shown below to make a stove.
Set it down the same way you did the Crafting Table and now place wood in both slots, this will create charcoal, which is used for cooking and more importantly, torches.
Placing a Stick and a piece of Charcoal above the stick will create 4 torches. Place some around your home by right clicking on a wall while you are holding them and it'll light up the home and keep mobs from spawning inside of the home during the night as they won't spawn near a light source of any kind, this includes torches and lava.
All we need are some bad cave drawings and we're golden! |
Finally, it's time to make a door, if you have 6 pieces of Wooden Planks, set them up as seen below to make a door.
Once the door is made, place it just outside of your home, this will keep monsters from getting inside in case you can't get enough wool for a bed and have to wait out the night. Granted, this step is completely optional, as you can place a block of dirt on the ground and it'll block the mobs from reaching you instead. This will help save wood in case your world doesn't have a lot of trees for your tools and torches.
Welcome mat sold separately. |
Now to make a sword, place the Sticks and Planks as seen below, it's the weakest sword in the game but it'll be enough to protect yourself for the time being. If you have enough left over cobblestone you can replace the wooden planks with that to make a Stone Sword, the same is true for pickaxes, shovels, hoes and axes.
We call that a wee pointy stick! |
Once you have a sword, and if there is enough daylight left, try and hunt down those sheep for the three pieces of wool. Once you have them place them on the 3x3 Crafting Table on top of three Wooden Planks as shown below. If not, wait the night out and try again in the morning.
Now set your bed down and when it's night time, right click on the bed
Sleep tight..don't let Herobrine bite.... |
By sleeping in a bed, you not only skip the night time compleatly, but also the bed will act as your spawn point if you die. However sleeping in a different bed will overwrite your last respawn place so be careful.
And...now its daytime, you just survived your very first day on your brand new Minecraft world! Next, getting food and gearing up for your first adventure.
Chapter 2: Getting By
Now that you have a home to sleep at and hide from monsters at night, it's time to look for some food.
Make sure to pay attention to your hunger, as when it is empty, you start taking damage and when full you'll start to regain whatever damage you have taken so it pays to keep it full. So how do you get food? Well the easiest way is to go out and hunt animals.
They look like ducks...that is just me though... |
Luckily I had made my home near some chickens so I don't have to go far, also cows and pigs will drop raw food when killed unless killed with fire damage, then it'll be dropped fully cooked. You CAN eat the food raw, but it'll only recover one icon of hunger. To get the full effect, better cook it.
To cook the food, just set it over coal as shown above, once you get some cooked food, just have it in your hand and hold the right mouse button.
Om nom nom! |
It is just that easy. Now before we set off on our first adventure into the underground, we need a place to store our non-vital goods. For that, we need to create a chest.
Put the eight wooden planks as shown above and you have yourself a chest to call your own. One little tip, placing two chests side by side will create a large chest so you can store more stuff. Now that you have a place to put your stuff, wait until the next day and now it's time to go on our first adventure!
Chapter 3: First Adventure!
Now, in order to find the good stuff, like iron or even diamonds, one needs to go underground. There are two ways to go about this, one can either start digging in any given spot, or, go find a cave to wander about.
Like this one! |
Now before you go into a cave, its important to bring a few vital items: Pickaxes, shovels, food, torches and most importantly, more wood to replace torches and tools while mining so you won't have waste a trek back to your home. Also carrying a stack of cobblestone helps,
Also, by lighting up the cave your mining, it'll keep mobs from spawning nearby and attacking you from behind. Now, something important to add here, there is no real way to tell what ore or blocks you'll run into, the best way to find it is to start mining. So pick a spot and go nuts.
And remember, when you find one type of ore, like this coal here...
There is most likely more of it nearby.
And if your lucky, you'll even come across another opening of a cave, or even a whole stronghold! In the end, know your limits, know when to head back to your home, drop off your blocks and gear up for another go.
